AMVIC cancels licence of Showtime Fabrications Inc. due to a high risk of financial harm to consumer
November 22nd, 2018, due to serious consumer complaints, AMVIC cancelled the automotive sales business licence of Calgary-based Showtime Fabrications Inc., effective Oct. 9, 2018. Investigations were launched in regards to five complaints filed with AMVIC by consumers of Showtime Fabrications Inc. Allegations include payment of large deposits without receiving anything in return.
Showtime Fabrications Inc. did not appeal the decision within 30 days, the appeal time frame given in accordance with the Consumer Protection Act Section 179 (1). Since the cancellation, some complainants have been able to retrieve their vehicles in various incomplete construction stages but they have not been refunded their deposit money.
AMVIC originally suspended Showtime Fabrication Inc.’s business licence on June 19, 2018, pending investigation of two complaints. The investigation found additional consumers who had provided deposits without an end product being supplied. Subsequently, on July 30, 2018, AMVIC charged Showtime Fabrications Inc. under the Consumer Protection Act for continuing to operate despite being suspended and for misrepresenting when goods will be supplied to a consumer.
“Due to the fact that this business dealt primarily with food trucks, the volume of affected consumers is low, however the risk remains high due to the steep monetary value of each transaction,” Malcolm Knox, AMVIC CEO said. “AMVIC felt it was important to alert consumers to the fact that Showtime Fabrications Inc. is no longer authorized to sell vehicles in Alberta.”
