Is your fleet ready for the ELD mandate?

It’s official: Canada will require the use of electronic logging devices (ELDs) starting June 2021. The announcement, which came from Federal Transport Minister Marc Garneau, was made on June 13, 2019, outside the Canadian Trucking Alliance in Toronto.

What this all means for trucking companies operating in Canada is that there may only be a small window to prepare, from the time the regulations are finalized, till go-live. During the last few months, there will be a rush to get compliance technology in place. Hardware availability may become an issue, as will ensuring the ELD provider is flexible enough to adapt their system to last minute changes in the standards.

It is in the best interest of fleets to adopt compliant ELD technology as soon as possible. The transition takes time in the form of evaluating different options and driver training. Installing AOBRDs/ERDs and then replacing them with ELDs so soon would be an inefficient process and an administrative burden.

The earlier you train your staff and drivers, the easier it will be when full compliance becomes mandatory. Easing everyone into this new experience will lighten the stress of learning and aid with adoption.

By starting early, you can try different devices to ensure you have one that will work for your company. If you leave things to the last minute, you may struggle with a technology that does not meet your needs.

Research proves that fleets who have adopted the ELDs early, have learned to use them in ways which allow the company to reduce costs, increase driver retention, improve road safety, and decrease violations.

If you drive through Canada or are a Canadian driver, don’t wait until the last minute to find out what’s going on.

Not complying with the ELD rules may result in ELD violations and out-of-service orders. In the U.S., fines for ELD violations could range from $1,000 to $10,000.
